The installation “White Energy” was originally created for the group exhibition “Heat / Energy” at Kummelholmen in 2021, which took its starting point from Kummelholmen’s origins as an oil-fired hot water center, as well as a supplier of hot water and energy to the surrounding area of Vårberg.
In the installation, the image of an energy flow was displaced — out of one wall and into the opposite. The film was projected onto one of Kummelholmen’s raw concrete walls, in one of the facility’s innermost and bitingly cold rooms, surrounded by darkness and the distinct smell of old oil. In this way, the history of the environment made the visitor physically aware of their own corporeality and its fundamental need for energy, water, and heat to function. Questions about our role in nature were thus posed through the realization that we consist of a body bound to it, whether we like it or not.
When the installation is now exhibited in StudyForArtPlatform’s small white cube, clinically stripped of Kummelholmen’s historical attributes, the experience of the installation instead becomes intellectual. Questions about our role in nature now arise instead from our detachment — our tendency to forget that we are, inescapably, physical beings bound to it.
